About Golden Week in Japan

Golden Week is one of the longest and busiest holiday seasons in Japan. Golden Week starts on the 29th April and includes a collection of four national holidays. The first is Showa Day on the 29th which celebrates the birthday of the former Emperor Showa who died in 1989. May 3rd is Constitution Day. On this day in 1947 the new post war constitution was put into effect. Greenery Day is celebrated on May 4th and is dedicated to the environment and nature. May 5th is Children's Day and in particular, Boy's Day. Families pray for the health and future success of boys in their family by hanging up carp streamers and displaying Samurai dolls, both symbols of strength, power and success in life. Girls Day, by the way, is celebrated on March 3rd. May 6th is designated a holiday in lieu of Green Day falling on a Sunday.

This year Golden Week consists of an isolated public holiday on the 29th April and a four day weekend between the 3rd and 6th of May.
